Elizabeth was named amongst the "50 Greenest Cities in the USA" during the year 2008 by Popular Science magazine. It was the only city within New Jersey to be selected.

The community was first known as "Elizabethtown," when it was initially settled during 1664 by its English inhabitants. This name was chosen in honor of the wife of Sir George Carteret, a noted colonial proprietor. Elizabeth was the initial capital of the state of New jersey. Officially, the name changed to become Elizabeth during the year 1855 upon its incorporation.

The very first major business within the area to support thousands of jobs was the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Ever since World War II, the city of Elizabeth has seen considerable growth in its transportation facilities. The Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, normally called Port Elizabeth, has become the main container ship facility serving North America's northeastern quadrant. In addition, it is among the world's busiest ports.

In Midtown Elizabeth, there are more than a dozen historical sites and landmarks, and in recent years, the Elizabeth Public Library has gone through major upgrades. The building was in fact a gift from Andrew Carnegie, dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. Boxwood Hall is one more historic place. This was the former house of the youngest person to sign the Constitution, Jonathan Dayton as well as the house of the President of the Continental Congress, Elias Boudinot. Other famous events consist of Portugal day, the Pride day in the Port, Julyfest and Unity Day. The yearly Tour De Elizabeth is held every Sunday prior to Memorial Day and it is a bike tour of the entire city.

The Newark Liberty International Airport is an extremely busy place and parts of it are actually in Elizabeth. The city of Elizabeth also features the popular Little Jimmy's Italian Ices since the year 1932, Jersey Gardens outlet mall, Loews Theatre and the Elizabeth Center. All of these ventures bring millions in revenue each year.

The city of Elizabeth, along with Linden, is home to the Bayway Refinery. This is a ConocoPhillips refining facility that makes around 37,000m3 or 230,000 barrels on a daily basis, supplying petroleum based products to the New Jersey/New York areas.
