With a population over more than 195,000, the city of Yonkers is considered the 4th most populated city within New York State and is the largest within Westchester County. Several attractions are situated in the city of Yonkers, such as the Sherwood House, the Hudson River Museum, Cross County Shopping Center, the Science Barge, Ridge Hill Shopping Center, and Yonkers Raceway. During the latter part of the 1640's, the city's history starts when Adriaen Van der Donck received a land grant form the Dutch East India Company. On the location where the Nepperhan Creek intersects the Hudson River, Van der Donck built one of the region's first saw mills. Van der Donck was lovingly referred to as Jonk Herr, that translates to young nobleman. Eventually, his land became called "Jonk Heer's land." The phrase developed into "the Younckers" and then lastly into Yonkers. Because of it's centralized place, Yonkers rapidly established itself as a major trading center. Throughout the early history of Yonkers it was mainly an agricultural community, but it's waterfront location quickly led to innovations in travel, which in turn accelerated the establishment of different industries all over Yonkers. There are some times during history where the city played a main role in hat and carpet manufacturing. What's more, it was the location of the globe's first elevated mass transit system. The city was first incorporated during the year 1872 with a population of roughly 20,000.
With more than $3 billion dollars in changes, Yonkers has recently put forth a proposal to revitalize the locality. The proposal consists of a lot of waterfront development, luxury housing, and a lot of commercial and retail space. The objective is to increase tourism as well as the economic importance of the city to the county and New York State.
There are quite a few yearly events that draw thousands of individuals to the city each and every year. The Yonkers Hudson Riverfest, that offers a diverse selection of crafts, entertainment and ethnic foods, draws a crowd of over 15,000 individuals. The Untermyer Performing Arts Festival holds performances every Saturday night throughout summertime. The events, which include opera, dance, music and street theatre, are free of charge and are held on the Hudson River. As well, the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra plays five times every year.
