The city of Abilene serves as the county seat for Taylor County and is considered to be "the Future Great City of West Texas". The county of Taylor currently has a population of just more than 120,000; 115,930 of these inhabitants live in the Abilene city limits. It is conveniently located near Interstate 20. The city of Abilene was established in March, 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad was finally done.
Even though Abilene is not fairly as large as several other cities situated in Texas, it still offers an ample amount of dining, lodging, shopping and cultural opportunities. Abilene is rapidly becoming recognized as a regional center for distribution, commerce, education, industry, and transportation.

There are numerous attractions to be found in Abilene. For individuals who are athletically inclined, there is the Abilene Skate Park, Abilene Speedway, Abilene Dragstrip, the Ball ranch and the Mesquite Hill Motocross Park. Abilene also offers some unique attractions, such as the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, the Grace Museum, 12 Armored Division Memorial Museum, the Center for Contemporary Arts, Prime Time family Entertainment Center, Paramount Theatre, Cockerell Galleries and Studios, Abilene Ballet Theatre, Abilene Community Theatre, Abilene Community Bank, Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, Abilene Opera Association, the Amy Graves Ryan Little Theatre and the Chorus Abilene.
A few of the other attractions within the city are the Abilene Zoo, the Dyess Visitor Center Memorial Park, the Abilene State Park and the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. In Abilene there are more than 25 parks which take up a total of about 1,246 acres.
The is an enormous assortment of animals housed at the Abilene Zoo, somewhere in the vicinity of several hundred animals. During the year, the Zoo offers some educational courses and summer courses. They even have several special events which take place every so often. Some of the newer attractions consist of a cougar exhibit, a Black Rhino exhibit and a Southern American maned Wolf Exhibit. The Elm Creek backyard area will house numerous animals such as armadillos, skunks, and river otters that have been found locally.
