 Seats for Forklifts Bixby - Bixby, Oklahoma is considered as suburb of Tulsa and is home to roughly 21,000 people. It is situated within both Wagoner and Tulsa counties. The population has grown by 7,500 residents during the past decade and is amongst the fastest growing communities within Oklahoma. Despite its growth the city is still referred to as "The Garden Spot of Oklahoma", the place to come for purchasing fresh produce.
The region was first settled during the late 1800s by Alexander Posey, the son of Muscogee (Creek) and Scottish parents. Posey, who became a nationally known political satirist, founded a community called "Posey on Posey Creek." The community had a blacksmith, a general store and two saloons, and by the year 1895 it had a post office. The city was named after a chairman of the Dawes Commission, Tams Bixby.
In 1913 the discovery of oil fields nearby caused growth within Bixby, though the township remained a farming community well into the 20th Century. Alfalfa, cotton and wheat were the main agricultural products until the 1930s, when vegetable production became more significant. Recognized as a regional shipping center for agricultural produce by railroad, the city was known as "The Garden Spot of Oklahoma." The railroad shipped potatoes, cantaloupes, squash, turnips, spinach, sweet corn and radishes from the city all around the nation. Just recently, these farms have been transformed to producing sod, mainly Bermuda grass. Although only a fraction of inhabitants are still employed within agriculture, the township still carries on its traditions with the yearly "Green Corn Festival" held every summer.
The city plays host to lots of public events at the Washington Irving Park and Arboretum. The park is named for a well-known American author who visited the town during 1832. The Washington Irving Park contains a bronze statue of Irving, and the stage of the amphitheatre has been made to resemble the front of Irving's house in Tarrytown, New York. The park entrance gates are replicas of the gates at Irving's estate. Drama students of Bixby present a dramatization of Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in the park each and every fall. The park also hosts the popular "Deutschesfest" and the "Bixby BBQ & Music Festival".
