Seats for Forklifts Topeka - The city of Topeka, Kansas serves as the capital city and county seat of Shawnee County. The city is situated within the northeast portion of Kansas State along the Kansas River. The city of Topeka has a present population of around 128,000. The Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 230,824. Other counties within the metro area are Jackson, Jefferson, Osage, Wabaunsee and Shawnee.

The city of Topeka was the site of the landmark legal Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, where it was declared that it was unconstitutional to declare racial segregation within public schools. Three Navy ships have been named after Topeka in order to commemorate its importance.

The word Topeka in the language of the Kansa and the Loway means "to dig good potatoes." The prairie potato was an essential food source for the Native Americans who inhabited the region. The Kansa people called what is presently called the Kansas River as "Topeka." The name was originally recorded in the year 1826, but the settlement was not called Topeka until the year 1855 when the founders declared it "novel, of Indian origin and euphonious of sound." Joseph James (Jojim) was a mixed-blood Kansa Indian who suggested the name. Topeka was a Free-State town founded by Eastern antislavery men following the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill. Topeka was chartered as a city during the year 1857.

Over 50 percent of the city's economy is based on government and services. City, county and state governments employ around 25% of the labor force. The city's largest employer is Kansas. 30% of the workforce is employed in services industries. Many are working in printing and publishing, food processing, iron foundries and flour mills. There are some Fortune 500 companies with distribution or manufacturing facilities in Topeka. Popular businesses consist of Frito-Lay Inc, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Hallmark Cards, Payless Shoe Source and Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway.

The city boasts a lot of fine art galleries with important selections of art, like for example the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn University. A little known fact about Topeka is that it is the home of the logo character for Mad Magazine, the character Alfred E. Neuman.
