It is the principal city of the Columbus, Georgia metropolitan area and is directly across the river from the city of Phenix, Alabama. Atlanta lies 160 km to the north of Columbus. South of the city is Fort Benning within Chattahoochee County. Columbus was name the 4th best city to live in the United States by Best Life Magazine. The city of Columbus was founded in the year 1828 at a location located by the navigable part of the Chattahoochee River. It was the last stretch of the Federal Road prior to leaving Georgia State and entering the state of Alabama. The site was home to Creek Indians before they were removed in 1836. Columbus was named after the explorer Christopher Columbus. Dr. Edwin L. DeGraffenried drew up the plan for Columbus and located it on a bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River. Cotton production was the region's major industry.
Columbus was connected to the international cotton market through the Chattahoochee. Textile mills were established to help build up the agricultural sector with industrial production, just after the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th Century. The city's commercial significance increased throughout the rest of the century. By 1860, it was considered an essential industrial center, referred to as "the Lowell of the South," in reference to a northern industrial township in the state of Massachusetts.
Expanding beyond the production of textiles, Columbus is presently home to a variety of famous industries. The head office for Aflac, TSYS, Synovus and Carmike Cinemas are located here. Columbus College grew from a two-year institution into the reputable Columbus State University. During the year 1971, Columbus became the very first city within the state to consolidate city and county governments.
