 Seats for Forklifts Montgomery - The city of Montgomery, Alabama is situated in the south-central portion of the state on the Gulf Coastal Plain along the Alabama River. The city of Montgomery has an estimated population of roughly 205,000 and serves as the capital city of Alabama and the county seat of Montgomery County. Montgomery is the 2nd-largest city in the state of Alabama (the city of Birmingham is the largest). The Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of around 375,000, making it the 4th-biggest MSA within the state of Alabama.
Montgomery was formed during the year 1819, when two towns along the Alabama River merged. The town roughly 30 years afterward became the capital state. The shift of state government to this region of Alabama acknowledged the value of cotton production. For several short months in the mid-1800s, Montgomery was chosen as the capital of the Confederate States of America, rapidly losing out to the city of Richmond, in Virginia. The city of Montgomery won a place for itself in the African-American rights history as the site of Civil Rights marches and the pivotal Montgomery Bus Boycott.
A significant section of Montgomery's jobs is provided by the regional and state government. These governmental agencies offer about 25 percent of the local employment. One more key cog in the local economy is the Maxwell Air Force Base. Aside from military and government, significant jobs derives from the following sectors: healthcare, wholesale and retail trade, agriculture, construction, finance and insurance, transportation, utilities, business and professional services, hospitality and leisure, manufacturing and education. High-tech manufacturing companies located within the city include the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing plant. Montgomery is home to two public universities: Auburn University-Montgomery and Alabama State. Montgomery is a major agricultural crops processing center. Major crops grown in the area include soybeans, cotton and peanuts. Montgomery is also a prominent regional distribution and wholesale center.
One of the premier city attractions is the Montgomery Zoo, which can accommodate more than 700 types of animals. The zoo expanded to more than 48 acres in the year 1989. The zoo also features a huge natural history museum called the Mann Wildlife Learning Museum. Housing a huge selection of North American wildlife, the museum displays permit viewing from all sides. Montgomery has the oldest fine arts museum in Alabama, The Museum of Fine Arts. Established in 1930, the museum has educational programs and temporary exhibitions, in addition to Southern regional art, a fine collection of American paintings, decorative arts and Old Master prints.
