The city of Clovis is an agricultural community situated on the mesa called Llano Estacado, within the eastern portion of New Mexico. Cannon Air Force Base is located there. The city is also noted for its role in early rock music history.

In prehistoric times, the peoples of the Clovis culture settled the eastern New Mexico region. Several anthropologically significant remains have been found at the Blackwater Draw site situated south of the city, near Portales. Tourists are welcome to go to this historical location.

Clovis was actually established back in 1906, when several Santa Fe Railroad engineers chose this location for a townsite. It was named "Santa Fe Railroad." The station master's daughter renamed it Clovis after the very first Catholic king of the Franks.

The whole area of west Texas and east-central New Mexico is dominated by agriculture and ranching. Production of peanuts, cattle ranching and cotton farming are major industries. The Clovis area has a number of processing plants for agricultural products, like for example the Southwest Cheese Company plant which processes milk from local dairies. Rail operations and transport have a lesser but still vital impact on the economy of the city. The business and financial needs of Clovis are met by institutions like for example Wells Fargo, Bank of America and regional financial institutions.

Clovis has fought to keep the Cannon Air Force Base in operation throughout the years. The Committee of Fifty is a local lobby group established to keep Cannon AFB open. Their efforts resulted in a realignment of Cannon as a special operations base.
