The city of Lincoln was initially established during 1856 as the village of Lancaster. It later became during the year 1859 the county seat of the newly created Lancaster County. Omaha has been the capital city of the Nebraska Territory since the year 1854, when the territory was initially formed. The majority of the population was located on the south side of the Platte River. The legislature voted to move the capital as far west as possible and south of the river after a major portion of the territory south of the Platte considered annexation to Kansas. They chose the area of Lancaster due mainly to the marshes and the salt flats that naturally took place within the area.
Most of the economic activity within Lincoln is derived from various service industries. The economy of Lincoln is quite typical of a mid-sized American city. Education, banking, medical, call centers, Allstate Insurance subsidiary and Lincoln Benefit Life are some of the other major businesses, along with truck and rail transport. The state government and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are additional large contributors to the economy of Lincoln.

There are lots of beautiful outdoor city parks scattered all around the city, more than 100 different parks in fact. Among the most popular are Holmes Park, Folsom Children's Zoo, Wilderness Park, Pioneers Park Nature Center, Sunken garden, Antelope Park, Oak Lake Park and Tierra Park. Lincoln has amongst the best trail systems within the nation with more than 99 miles of trails. These interconnected trails offer the perfect opportunity for rollerblading, biking, walking, and hiking. Another famous hobby in the region is fishing. Amongst the main species include Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Carp, Bullhead, Channel Catfish and Bluegill.
Live music is another common feature to enjoy within the city. There are lots of festivities for visitors and locals to choose from. One of the great venues is the Pershing Auditorium where large tours and national acts perform on a regular basis. Knickerbockers and Duffy's Tavern are other well known venues that features regional and local acts. The Zoo Bar features nightly blues music. The Lied Center is home of lots of concerts, Broadway productions and guest lectures. Community theatre can be enjoyed at the Lincoln Community Theatre, and the UNL student's stage productions.
